Late yesterday afternoon, the Spanish parliament followed the European lead and approved a new law for car emissions. A varying tax will be applied to all cars from 2008.
For those that produce less that 120g CO2/km there is an exemption. Cars producing 120-160 gCO2/km will have to pay 4.75% tax, while those producing 160-200gCO2/km will pay 9.75%. The big polluters of more than 200gCO2/km will pay at 14.75%.
Jet-skis and quad-bikes will also pay a 14.75% tax. However, residents of the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta are exempt, while those in the Canary Islands pay a lesser rate.
This policy is in line with European emission standards.
