Andalucia unveils ambitious clean energy plan

Andalucia, again ahead of the game, has today unveiled a clean energy plan that aims to have 32% of all electricity generated in the autonomous community come from renewable sources. This figure represents 90% of all Andalucian housing having access to clean energy and is a clear commitment to combating climate change.

Andalucia’s previous energy plan, for years 2003-2006, set sights on achieving 10% clean energy generation. It only managed to reach 6% due to demand sharply increasing in the same time period.

How do they propose to better this? Three ways: modernisation of public utilities, introduction of new technologies and – most importantly – consciousness raising of the average citizen. Because, as they rightly see, if you change the culture of consumption, you change consumption. Ergo, conspicuous consumption a la USA with its Hummers and 4×4’s and air con’s above electric fires becomes passe or even uncool and so the tipping point gets nearer.
